Myrtle Beach National Travel and Tourism Week

May 7-13th marks the 28th annual National Travel and Tourism Week. The Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce is joining the hundreds of cites, states, and businesses around the country in the annual salute to travel and tourism in the United States. The cities of Horry County who are participating are: Conway, Myrtle Beach, and Surfside Beach. They are making declarations for the week and according to the MBACC, there are nearly 15 million tourists that visit the Myrtle Beach area each year. The National Travel and Tourism Week was established as National Tourism Week in 1983 when the United States Congress passed a joint resolution designating the week to be celebrates in May 1984. President Ronald Reagan at that time signed a presidential proclamation urging citizens to observe the week.

For the celebration, the MBACC is planning a week of activities and promotions for visitors of the Grand Strand. For instance, the chamber’s visitor centers in Myrtle Beach will be serving complimentary refreshments during the week and the Myrtle Beach International Airport visitor center will have live music and offer refreshments throughout the week.

Myrtle Beach Vacation Marketing Efforts

On Tuesday, the Myrtle Beach business leaders found out how well their marketing efforts turned out from last year. The Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce hired the Equation Research to present the results of the 2010 Conversion/Economic Impact Study. According to the Chamber officials in February, they told the Myrtle Beach City Council that the marketing efforts worded and according to Equation Research, “a third of visitors and advertising influenced their decision to come to Myrtle Beach.” With that said the marketing to bring in tourist made $307 for every dollar spent on marketing based for those who asked about the Myrtle Beach Vacationbeach and eventually came to the area. In 2010, there were about 66 percent of website visitors who came to the beach and resulted in more than 1 million travel parties last year.

Also, according to the research presented, “each visiting party spent, on average, the most on accommodations, $604; followed by $513 on restaurants/groceries, and $444 on shopping, as well as more on golf, entertainment, transportation and miscellaneous items. The spending is based on a survey of 2,270 people who requested information and came here last year.” Phil Vassar, the chairmen of the chamber’s marketing council stated that “ considering all the statistics, the sales tax has boosted business at the beach, luring folks to stay in hotels, eat out and play the golf courses…we take it all in and evaluate it all together…the marketing brought an increased number of people in here.” The Myrtle Beach officials say that the momentum of last year should continue into this summer and with new attractions such as the SkyWheel and WonderWorks, there is sure to be even better results!

Sky Wheel Attraction

This summer there will be a new attraction added to the Grand Strand, a 200-foot tall SkyWheel! The ride is scheduled to open May 19 and according to Chris Trout, the SkyWheel’s general manager and an alumni of Coastal Carolina University, “We are on track…Everything has had to be done within those tight boundaries.” However, when the SkyWheel is completed it will have 42 enclosed climate controlled gondolas and each ride will last between eight and twelve minutes and each loop taking about three minutes. However, officials do not like calling it a “ride.” Trout said, “It’s not an amusement ride,” but he explains that it is a slow moving wheel but “it’s an experience.” The SkyWheel is an experience for all ages and even small children, wheelchairs, and expecting mothers can ride the wheel. Tickets will be $12 for adults, $8 for children ages 3 to 11 and free for children under 2. Seniors ages 55 and older as well as military personnel with an ID will get $4 off. Trout also reassures the public that there is “only three weeks to go” but “we’ll be ready.”
